Am I Not A Man and a Brother?
The project, which is linked to the 2007 bi-centenary of the abolition of the slave trade in this country, was led by author Laura Fish with additional workshops from artist Gloria Ojulari Sule. The project was supported by the Norwich Town Close Estate Charity.
Black History Month, first celebrated in the UK in 1987, aims to:
• Promote knowledge of Black History and experience
• Disseminate information on positive Black contributions to British Society
• Heighten the confidence and awareness of Black people in their cultural heritage

In Norfolk we have chosen Sankofa as our logo for Black History Month. It is an Akan (West African) symbol based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward with its head turned backwards. The Akan believe that the past serves as a guide for planning the way ahead - it is this wisdom which ensures a strong future.
Despite attempts to undermine and demean, Africa has always exerted a strong positive presence in the world through the vitality of its culture and achievements and that of the African diaspora. Black History Month creates an opportunity to reflect, to set right, reinstate, remember and celebrate.
