Martin Figura
Work-Space-Work

One of our most exciting photographic talents in the Eastern Region, Martin Figura is a social documentary photographer who specialises in portraiture. In this solo exhibition, shot over a period of almost three years, Martin chronicles Dunstable’s struggle to overcome the economic catastrophe caused by the closure of the All Wheel Drive industrial site in the early 1990's.
Martin's work codifies the story of regeneration into the language of humanity, and a common need for job security in the face of global competition. The recent demolition and re-building of the site is now attracting new, different businesses to the area, reflecting the changing industrial landscape of the country as a whole.

In 2000, Martin was charged with the responsibility of documenting the Year of the Artist celebrations in the East of England. The resulting portfolio captured artists in unexpected circumstances or working to wider social agendas. Martin’s work has been widely published and exhibited across England and Europe including, but not exclusively: The Photographers’ Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, and the Imperial War Museum.
