‘After years of waiting, it seems everyone who said performance poetry would be the new rock and roll has been proven wrong. It’s the new hip-hop and stand-up comedy too.’ Tim Clare
Live poetry, stand-up poetry, performance poetry, spoken word. Call it what you like but it’s taking off across the UK, and Norwich has always been a hot-bed for live literature.

The Monday Night Alternative is a new spoken word club hosted by Channel 4’s Tim Clare. As part of The Poetry Link, a regional touring network, which also features stop-offs in Southend and Peterborough, The Monday Night Alternative is able to bring you the very best poets and performers on the UK scene.

After a barnstorming April debut, Norwich’s only regular spoken word night returns on the 19th of May with an eclectic grab-bag of the best poetic talent from across the UK. Repeating the dual-headliner formula that made its inaugural night such a success, this month’s show features the unstoppable London-Irish hip-hop artist MC Angel, and the whimsical lyrical stylings of scene sweetheart Dockers MC.

Dockers MC

Listed by The Times as one of the top ten literary talents of 2008 Dockers MC is currently wowing audiences as the warm-up act for Kate Nash and Luke Wright. It’s Dockers’ clarity and hilarity combined that makes her talent so entertaining. Her stories of Rude Girls, office geeks and obsessive Rolf Harris fans literally have the audience indulging in her every word and vying to be caught in her dottily dressed eye contact.

Switching seamlessly between a diverse cast of quirky, hilarious characters, she weaves the kind of whimsical, wonderful stories that have audiences hanging on her every slickly-delivered word.

MC Angel

MC Angel is a tough London-Irish girl who is afraid of absolutely no one. Her conscious rhymes and unique rhythmic flows have left a permanent stamp on London’s thriving live Hip-hop scene and she is the winner of many poetry slams and MC battles. She recently performed at London’s world famous Jazz Café with soul singing Legend Andrew Roachford and has been featured on Channel 4 and the BBC.

Tim Clare

Presenter of Channel 4’s How To Get A Book Deal, Guardian writer and winner of Poetry Idol 9, Tim Clare regularly performs stand-up poetry at festivals, cabaret nights and theatres across the UK. He is also producing the show and explains “I'm really excited about bringing some of the UK's best spoken word acts to Norwich. The Poetry Link is an amazing opportunity to raise the profile of an entire artform right across the region.”

Tim says, ‘It’s a guilty pleasure watching people’s faces when they see our acts and realise that poetry isn’t all about long, serious recitals in a dusty library. This is poetry for everyone. It reaches out and makes them laugh, think, feel. Sometimes sneeze. But never yawn.’

The Poetry Link is supported by New Writing Live, New Writing Partnership’s Live Literature programme. New Writing Live aims to raise the quality, quantity and profile of live literature in the East of England through a variety of training and performance opportunities for live literature artists and producers.
